Summit Recap

Following the success of the previous two years, B4Development and Nudge Lebanon virtually launched the 3rd annual BX Arabia summit on 20th and 21st December, 2020.

Over two days, BX Arabia 2020 hosted 9 panels gathering 37 speakers including policymakers, academics and practitioners, and had a virtual reach of over 500+ attendees from the region and abroad.

BX Arabia 2020 showcased the strides made in harnessing the power of behavioural science to tackle the challenges that were presented as a result of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic that swept the world by surprise over the past year, and its adaption to the “new normal”.

Dr. Fadi Makki, Advisor to the Secretary General for the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy; Head of B4Development and Founder of Nudge Lebanon, said “This year we did not want COVID-19 to cancel what has become a behavioral sciences festival not only for the Arab region, but also for the global community, academics and practitioners, we were keen to maintain that tradition which we hope to do in person in 2021”.

This year’s summit covered topics related to mental health & well-being, remote learning and its impact on student learning, and compliance with COVID-19 preventive measures, among many others.

Our speakers brought thought-provoking discussions and case studies about the role of behavioural science in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis and the lessons learned. Discussions emphasized the role of adapting behavioural science research during uncertain times, the importance of leveraging scalable technologies to reach wider audiences, and building the capacity of organizations and government in behavioural insights and experimentation.

The summit also featured keynote addresses from Cass Sunstein (Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard Law School, and co-author of ‘Nudge’) on the effect of too much information peoples’ lives and its policy implications, and Dilip Soman (Canada Research Chair in Behavioural Sciences and Economics at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and Director of the Behavioural Economics in Action Research Centre at Rotman), on the scaling up of behavioural research.
