Board of Trustees

NudgeLebanon has a Board of Trustees that is comprised of a mixture of academics and practitioners who meet semi-annually to provide advice on strategic direction in key Nudge Lebanon’s policy areas.

Rima Afifi Dr. Rima Afifi is a professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the College of Public Health of the University of Iowa. Prior to that, she was a professor in the Department of Health Promotion & Community Health and an Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the American University of Beirut. Rima’s research and practice fall into four broad categories: youth wellbeing, protective factors among youth, tobacco control, and intervention evaluation. She advocates for a focus on the social and structural determinants of well-being to promote inclusion, equity, and justice. She has authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications and has engaged in extensive professional practice in the Arab region. She holds a PhD from St. Louis University, a Masters of Public Health from the University of North Carolina, and a BS in Psychology from the University of Iowa
Saouma BouJaoude2.0 Dr. Saouma BouJaoude is the associate dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut (AUB). He is the director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, a board member of the International Society of Educational Research (ISER), and an executive committee member of the Supreme Education Council in Qatar. He is also a professor of science education at AUB. He holds a PhD and a Masters in Education, Curriculum, and Instruction from the University of Cincinnati.
Mustapha Ezzeddine Dr. Mustapha Ezzeddine is an Associate professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology, and the director of the Cerebrovascular Program, at the University of Minnesota. He is the principal investigator for the University of Minnesota regional coordinating centre for the National Institutes of Health StrokNet, the preeminent research network focused on developing and conducting clinical research trials in stroke prevention, acute treatment and recovery. He is involved in numerous clinical trials, including trials focusing on patient behaviour and self management of stroke risk factors. He obtained his MD degree at the American University of Beirut, and postgraduate medical training at Duke University and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Maha Makki Mrs. Maha H. Makki is co-founder of Nudge Lebanon. She is currently the Director of the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the American University of Beirut. Maha has extensive experience in several school and university settings in Lebanon and the Arab countries where she had teaching, administrative, as well as advisory roles. Her academic background spans health sciences, education, and management. She holds a BS in Environmental Health, a Teaching Diploma and an MA in Science Education from the American University of Beirut. She also holds an MBA from the Ecole Supérieure des Affaires. Maha serves on the board of The Assad Diab Cultural Foundation and is also co-founder of Teach A Child, an NGO that strives to ensure that every child in Lebanon is given an education and the opportunity to prosper.
Fatima Keaik-ElKhalil Mrs. Fatima Keaik-Elkalil is a co-founder of Nudge Lebanon. She is the UNDP project coordinator for the establishment of Kuwait Public Policy Centre (KPPC) in collaboration with the General Secretariat for the Supreme Council for Planning and Development. She has previously worked in various international organizations. In her course of work, she was involved in applying behavioural insights in national programs in line with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. She holds a Master’s Degree in Behavioural Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Dario Krpan.jpg Dr. Dario Krpan is an Assistant Professor in Behavioural Science at LSE. He is a proponent of multidisciplinary research and is interested in combining methodologies and theoretical approaches from sciences such as economics and physics with psychology to discover most effective ways of changing human behaviour and measuring the behavioural change. He is a published author in top psychology journals, such as the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. His main research interest lies in uncovering how human body and various contextual forces can be used to influence and predict human motivation and eventually behaviour. He holds MPhil and PhD from the University of Cambridge and an undergraduate degree from Webster University Vienna.
FN.png Mr. Faisal Naru is currently Senior Economic Adviser at the OECD responsible for a team that works with governments internationally on behavioural insights, regulatory policy and governance, institutional change and organizational culture. As a public policy expert, he has worked in and with governments from across the world including on behavioral science, public sector modernisation and regulatory reform. He is a former member of the UK Cabinet Office and was the Chief Advisor to the Government of Viet Nam on economic and regulatory reforms. Prior to Viet Nam, he set up and was Head of the Policy and Regulatory Reform Practice as well as on the Leadership Board for a global development consultancy working in Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe on public sector change and performance improvement. He graduated from the University of Oxford.
Ramzi Mabsout.jpg Dr. Ramzi Mabsout is an assistant professor in the Department of Economics at the American University of Beirut. From 2012 to 2015 he served as the acting-chair for the Department of Economics, later to become chair from 2015 to 2016. He is a published author in many journals including World Development, Ecological Economics, Journal of Economic Methodology, the Review of Social Economics, among others. He also contributed to various policy reports including UNDP, ESCWA, and ILO reports. Dr. Mabsout has a PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen, MA from the University of Sussex, and BA from AUB.
Fadi Makki Dr. Fadi Makki is founder of Nudge Lebanon and the Consumer Citizen Lab. He is pioneer in the application of behavioural economics to public policy in the Middle East and currently leading the creation of the first nudge unit in the Middle East, the Qatar Behavioural Insights Unit. He is member of the World Economic Forum’s Council for the Future of Behavioural Sciences, Senior Fellow at Georgetown Qatar and AUB’s Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy. He was Director General of the Lebanese Ministry of Economy & Trade, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Advisor to the Ministry of Economy and Commerce in Qatar. He worked previously at Booz & Company, and was Visiting Lecturer at AUB and Saint Joseph’s University. He obtained his PhD from Cambridge University, Master from the London School of Economics and Hull University, BA from AUB and LLB from the Lebanese University.
Tarek Mitri H.E. Dr. Tarek Mitri is the director of the Issam Fares Institute on Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut (AUB). From 2012 to 2014, he was the special representative of the United Nations secretary-general for Libya. Between 2005 and 2011, he served in four successive Lebanese governments as minister of environment, administrative reform, culture, information and acting minister of foreign affairs. Previously, he worked, in various capacities, in the area of intercultural and interreligious dialogue and taught in multiple universities. He holds a PhD in political science from the University of Paris X.
Ghassan Moukheiber H.E. Ghassan Moukheiber is a member of the Lebanese Parliament, representing the Metn district since 2002. He is a long-time activist in a number of Lebanese civil society organizations dealing with the areas of human rights, anti-corruption, democratization, the rule of law and conflict resolution. In addition, he is a member of the parliamentary committees on law and administration, and on environment. He is rapporteur of the parliamentary committee on Human Rights. He obtained his law degree from U.S.J. in 1981 and his LL.M. from Harvard Law School in 1983.
Dr. Nasser Saidi.png Dr. Nasser Saidi heads Nasser Saidi & Associates, a niche consulting firm. He is the Founder and former Executive Director of the Hawkamah-Institute for Corporate Governance and the Mudara Institute of Directors. He is the former Chief Economist of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), 2006-2012, and senior adviser to the UAE Minister of Finance, 2004-2006. He was Minister of Economy and Trade and Minister of Industry of Lebanon between 1998 and 2000, as well as First Vice-Governor of the Central Bank, 1993-2003. He is Chairman of the regional Clean Energy Business Council, member of the IMF’s Regional Advisory Group for MENA and the Advisory Board of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF). He is well published with numerous articles and books on macroeconomics, financial markets, crowd funding, corporate governance, clean energy and ICT. He served as Professor at the University of Chicago, the IUHEI and the Université de Genève, AUB and the USJ. He holds a Ph.D. and a M.A. in Economics from the University of Rochester in the USA, a M.Sc. from University College, London University and a B.A. from AUB
Maggie Salem24.png Mrs. Maggie Salem is the Executive Director of Qatar Foundation International. Prior to that, she was the MENA’s Regional Director at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). She also worked as an independent communications consultant to leading U.S., European and Middle Eastern companies, nongovernmental organizations and academic groups. Additionally, she served as director of communications and external relations at the Middle East Institute. Maggie completed coursework for a master’s degree at Georgetown University and holds a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.
shephard_daniel_modified.jpg Mr. Daniel Shephard is the co-founder and president of IS-CS Group, a non profit dedicated to expanding the capacity of other organizations to develop and implement effective programs and communication efforts, with a focus on education and behavioural insights. He is also currently an affiliate of Nudge4 Solutions Labs and the Office of Evaluation Science. He previously worked as a member of the Obama Administration’s Social and Behavioral Sciences Team, an innovation specialist with the Office of Evaluation Sciences, the senior education and research manager at Aflatoun International, a consultant for the International Labour Organization, and as a teacher. He holds a Master of Science degree in Evidence Based Social Intervention from the University of Oxford. He has helped implement and evaluate innovative programs in dozens of countries around the globe.
Mazen Tajeddine (2.0) Mr. Mazen Tajeddine is a co-founder of Nudge Lebanon. He is a senior legal consultant advising the Ministry of Justice since 2014 and the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department in the UAE since 2009. He is the founder and managing partner of Tajeddine, Azar & Partners Law Firm in Beirut and an Arbitrator at the Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation & Arbitration Centre and the Dubai International Arbitration Centre. He served as a Judge at the Lebanese Ministry of Justice for 10 years looking into commercial and criminal cases in Beirut. He holds a diploma in Judicial Studies from the Lebanese Judicial Academy and an LLB from the Lebanese University.
